Kanrei Shirayuri Gakuen is located in Hakone, in the westernmost part of Kanagawa Prefecture, about two hours from Tokyo by train. The school lies within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, close to Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi, two of Japan’s most celebrated natural landmarks. Because the Hakone area is volcanic and blessed with numerous natural hot springs, it has been a famous resort destination since pre-modern times and is home to many hotels and traditional Japanese inns (ryokan). The Fujiya Hotel, the oldest Western-style hotel in Japan, is located in the area and has welcomed such distinguished guests as Charlie Chaplin and John Lennon. The region also features several art museums, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum (Chokoku no Mori), which boasts numerous works by Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso.
Students
Far from the bustle of the city, students at Kanrei Shirayuri Gakuen spend their days surrounded by nature and culture. The campus includes a junior high school (50 students) and a senior high school (80 students), as of July 2026. Dressed in Shirayuri’s signature sailor-style uniforms, the students devote themselves to their studies and sports. Our faculty of 40 believes in the innate ability and potential of every student and strives to help each one flourish and thrive on the global stage of today’s cosmopolitan society.
Building
The school building is bright and immaculate. At its highest point, a statue of Jesus with open arms gently watches over the campus. The most sacred place on campus is a replica of the grotto at Lourdes, where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette. Students and faculty bow here out of respect when they arrive at school and before they go home. Kanrei Shirayuri Gakuen also has an extensive library, a computer room, an audio-visual room, and its own retreat house, the Paul-kan, complete with natural hot-spring baths. There is also a dormitory for students who live far from school; approximately 25 junior and senior high school students live there.
Nature around Us
